Welcome to Windows Hyper-V Virtual Machine!

This Getting Started Guide is written for new resellers of our Windows Hyper-V VM solution. It will guide you through some of the basic steps that you should follow to set up your new virtual machine. Note that this guide is intended for Windows VMs with no control panel – if you purchased a plan that comes with Parallels Plesk control panel, see Getting Started with Parallels Plesk Panel.

The items covered in this guide include:

CONNECTING WITH WINDOWS VM WITH NO CONTROL PANEL

If your Windows virtual machine does not come with a control panel such as Parallels Plesk panel, you will need to connect with it another way. With Remote desktop connection, you can move your files freely between your VM and any computer, with no need for additional programs or confusing FTP information. See the link below for instructions to connect with your Windows VM by Remote Desktop.

CREATING A FTP WEBSITE IN IIS

Once you have successfully connected with your VM, you will want to start uploading your website. Microsoft FTP service is installed along with the IIS web server role and integrates with IIS 8.0. See the instructions at the link below to understand how to create a FTP website in IIS.

CREATING A WEBSITE IN IIS

When you want to publish content for access over the Internet, you can add a website to your web server to hold the content. The link below contains instructions to help you create your website in IIS. Note that you may use the following steps only when your VM subscription does not come with Plesk panel. If your subscription does come with Plesk panel, it is easier to create your site via Plesk.

SETTING UP MICROSOFT SQL SERVER

You may need databases to store and access the information for your website. The guide at the link below shows how to create a MS SQL Database on your Windows VM. You may use the Microsoft SQL Web Edition, which is pre-installed on your server, to help you create new databases that you can associate with your website.

CREATING AND MANAGING USERS

Now that you have your website and databases set up, you may find that you need to assign access to your server for additional users. Apart from using the default administrator account we provide to log into your server, you can create temporary user accounts which have permission to login and manage the server. You can even provide the user permission to make changes inside the server by adding the user to specific groups such as an administrator group. The article below shows you how to perform all of these functions to create and manage users on your server.

CONFIGURING MS FIREWALL

By configuring a MS firewall, you can protect your server from malicious attackers on the Internet. A firewall restricts the inbound and outbound connections to the server. The following link takes you to an article that explains how to configure a Microsoft firewall.

ACTIVATING AN ADDITIONAL IP ADDRESS

Some of our Windows Hyper-V VM plans have two IP addresses included, however only one is activated upon provisioning. You will need to activate the second IP manually by following the instructions at the link below. You can follow the same instructions if you have purchased an additional IP and you need to activate it.

This concludes the Windows VM (no control panel) starter guide. You should now have an understand of the basic set up and use of your Windows VM. If you need more help using your VM, please consult our knowledge base at http://www.kb.cloud.im.
