If you see any error when you download Norton, or if download did not complete, try to redownload the product from the Norton account.

If you cannot find Norton that you want to download in your account, read Find Norton subscription in your account .

Redownload Norton

  1. Download Norton.

  2. If you are not signed in to Norton already, you will be prompted to sign in. Type in your email address and password for Norton, and click Sign In.

  3. In the Get Started window, click Download Norton.

  4. Click Agree & Download.

    You may see the message "Trial period expired" if you install a wrong product. Make sure that you download Norton that has an active subscription.

    If you have a product key you have not yet registered to your account, click Enter a new product key to continue.

    Type the product key and click >. Follow the on-screen instructions to activate the product.

  5. Depending on your browser, do one of the following:

    • For Internet Explorer: Click Run.

    • For Firefox or Safari: On the top-right corner of the browser, click the Download option to view the downloaded files, and click the file that you downloaded.

    • For Chrome: On the bottom-left corner, click the file that you downloaded.

  6. If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.

    Follow the on-screen instructions.

  7. Norton is now installed and activated.

If you cannot download or install Norton even after you follow the steps, select one of the following that best describes your situation:

Download doesn't start or complete

Start the install

  • After you click Agree & Download, a file is downloaded to your computer. You have to double-click the downloaded file to continue the installation. If you have not located and double-clicked the downloaded file, do one of the following depending on your browser:

    • For Internet Explorer: Click Tools > View downloads. In the View downloads window, next to the Norton file, click Run.

    • For Firefox or Safari: On the top-right corner of the browser, click the down arrow to view the downloaded files, and then click the Norton file that you downloaded.

    • For Chrome: On the top-right corner, click the Customize and control button, and then click Downloads. In the Downloads page, click the Norton file that you downloaded.

If the download doesn't start or stops and then doesn't progress, delete the Windows temporary files and then directly download and install your Norton product.

Delete Windows Temporary files

If you have Norton for Mac, skip this step and go to the Download the installer directly section.

  1. Exit all programs.

  2. Press Windows + R keys together to open the Run dialog box.

  3. In the Run dialog box, type the following text:

    %temp%

  4. Click OK.

    The current user's Temp folder opens in Windows Explorer.

  5. On the Edit menu, click Select All.

  6. Press Delete.

  7. If you are asked to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

If you continue to have problems with downloading Norton from your account even after you delete the Windows temporary files, you can directly download and install Norton from one of the following links.

Download the installer directly

  1. Select Norton:

  2. Do one of the following depending on your browser:

    • For Internet Explorer: Click Run.

    • For Firefox or Safari: On the top-right corner of the browser, click the Download option to view the downloaded files, and double-click the file that you downloaded.

    • For Chrome: On the bottom-left corner, double-click the file that you downloaded.

  3. If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install your Norton product.

Start the install

  • After you click Agree & Download, a file is downloaded to your computer. You have to double-click the downloaded file to continue the installation. If you have not located and double-clicked the downloaded file, do one of the following depending on your browser:

    • For Internet Explorer: Click Tools > View downloads. In the View downloads window, next to the Norton file, click Run.

    • For Firefox or Safari: On the top-right corner of the browser, click the down arrow to view the downloaded files, and then double-click the Norton file that you downloaded.

    • For Chrome: On the top-right corner, click the Customize and control button, and then click Downloads. In the Downloads page, click the Norton file that you downloaded.

Check if the install window is hidden

  • There are chances that the install window is hidden behind other windows. We suggest that you minimize all open windows to see the install window.

If the install window doesn't appear after you complete the download or the install doesn't start, we recommend that you remove any non-Symantec security product from your computer and then try again.

Uninstall all non-Symantec security products

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

    appwiz.cpl

  3. In the list of installed programs, click any non-Symantec security product, and then click Remove or Uninstall.

  4. Follow the instructions to completely remove the product.

  5. Restart your computer.

If the install still fails, then there may be pieces of an old Norton causing the problems. Download and run the Norton Removal tool and then try downloading and installing the product again.

Run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool

If you have Norton for Mac, read Uninstall Norton for Mac.

If you have Norton Family installed, uninstall it before you run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool.

  1. Download the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool.

    Save the file to the Windows desktop. On some browsers, the file is automatically saved to its default location.

  2. To open the Downloads window in your browser, press the Ctrl + J key.

  3. Double-click the NRnR icon.

  4. Read the license agreement, and click Agree.

  5. Click Advanced Options.

  6. Click Remove Only.

  7. Click Remove.

  8. Click Restart Now.

    After the computer restarts, follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall Norton.

I see the error "Another version of a Norton product has been detected on this computer"

To fix this problem, download and run the Norton Removal Tool. After the computer restarts, download and install Norton.

Run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool

If you have Norton Family installed, uninstall it before you run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool.

  1. Download the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool.

    Save the file to the Windows desktop. On some browsers, the file is automatically saved to its default location.

  2. To open the Downloads window in your browser, press the Ctrl + J key.

  3. Double-click the NRnR icon.

  4. Read the license agreement, and click Agree.

  5. Click Advanced Options.

  6. Click Remove Only.

  7. Click Remove.

  8. Click Restart Now.

    After the computer restarts, follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall Norton.

I see an incompatibility message when I download or install Norton

The incompatibility may happen if your computer does not have the latest service pack installed or when you to try to install an older version of Norton.
